Contacts Converter

Excel or CSV to vCard, and vCard to CSV or Excel. Free, no signup, no upload.

How It Works

Excel/CSV to vCard: choose a spreadsheet. The converter finds the row with the column names, matches each column to a contact field by its heading, and shows a preview of the first contacts. Fix any column it got wrong, then download one .vcf file holding every contact. It is written as vCard 3.0 in UTF-8, which iPhone, iCloud, Google Contacts and Outlook for Mac all read.

vCard to Excel/CSV: choose a .vcf exported from an iPhone, iCloud, Android or another app. Pick Outlook, Google or plain column headings and download a CSV or an Excel file. You can also split the file into one .vcf per contact.

New to this? The step-by-step guides cover getting an Excel list onto an iPhone, getting iPhone contacts into Excel, and why Outlook imports only the first contact.

What Is a .vcf File?

A .vcf file is a vCard: plain text with one card per contact, each between BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD. A single file can hold one contact or thousands. Each line is a field, such as TEL;TYPE=CELL:+1 555 0100. Long lines are “folded” onto the next line, which starts with a space.

There are three versions in use. Version 2.1 is common in Android exports and often encodes accented letters as QUOTED-PRINTABLE (for example =C3=A9 for é). Version 3.0 (RFC 2426) is what iPhone and iCloud export. Version 4.0 (RFC 6350) is the newest and least common. The converter reads all three and writes 3.0.

Commas, semicolons and backslashes have special meaning inside a vCard, so a company called “Acme, Inc.” is written as ORG:Acme\, Inc.. The converter escapes and unescapes these for you.

Outlook has three e-mail columns and one column per phone type. If a contact has more than fit, the extras are added to its Notes so nothing is lost. Google CSVs get as many Phone and E-mail columns as the busiest contact needs.

Limitations

Photos are not carried over to CSV or Excel. Each spreadsheet row becomes one contact with one postal address. Custom labels (such as an iPhone “Gym” phone label) become plain phone types. Birthdays are written as YYYY-MM-DD. The Outlook CSV uses Outlook’s English column headings; Microsoft says headings must match Outlook’s language, so rename them if your Outlook runs in another language. Excel files are read with the SheetJS library, which loads only when you choose an Excel file; password-protected workbooks are not supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn an Excel contact list into a file my iPhone can import?

Choose your .xlsx or .csv file on the Excel/CSV to vCard tab, check that each column is matched to the right field, then download the .vcf. Email it to yourself and tap the attachment on the iPhone, or import it on iCloud.com. All contacts go into one .vcf file, so they import in one go.

Which vCard versions can it read?

vCard 2.1, 3.0 and 4.0, including files with many contacts, folded long lines, and the QUOTED-PRINTABLE encoding that Android phones use for accented and non-Latin names. Photos are skipped, because a CSV or spreadsheet has no place for them. The converter writes vCard 3.0.

What is the difference between the Outlook, Google and plain CSV options?

They only differ in the column headings. Outlook uses the headings from Microsoft's sample import file (First Name, Mobile Phone, E-mail Address and so on). Google uses the headings from Google's contacts import template (E-mail 1 - Value, Phone 1 - Value and so on). Plain uses short headings that are easy to read in Excel.

Why do some phone numbers show a warning like 1.23457E+11?

Excel showed a long phone number in scientific notation, and the CSV was saved with that shortened text. The real digits are gone from the file, so the converter leaves those numbers out instead of creating wrong ones. Format the phone column as Text in Excel, retype or re-paste the numbers, and save again.

Can it split one .vcf with many contacts into separate files?

Yes. On the vCard to Excel/CSV tab, choose the file and click Download separate .vcf files. You get a ZIP with one .vcf per contact, each a copy of that contact's original card. This helps with apps, such as Outlook for Windows, that only read the first contact in a file.

Are my contacts uploaded anywhere?

No. Files are read and converted by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the Excel and ZIP libraries the page uses are served from this site, not loaded from a third party.
