Hours Calculator
Add up shifts and breaks. Totals in h:mm and decimal hours.

How It Works
Type a start and end time for each shift, plus any unpaid break in minutes. Times can be 24-hour (21:30) or 12-hour with am/pm (9:30pm). If the end is earlier than the start, the shift runs past midnight into the next day. You can also paste finished durations, one per line, and they are added to the total.
Totals are shown as hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which is what payroll and invoices usually need. With an hourly rate, pay is decimal hours × rate, rounded to the cent. A bare number such as 7.45 is read as decimal hours (7 h 27 min), so type 7:45 if you mean 7 hours 45 minutes.
The guide to hours and minutes in decimal explains why 7:45 is 7.75 hours, not 7.45.
Rounding and the 7-Minute Rule
Rounding is off by default. When it is on, each start and end time is rounded before the break is subtracted, because that is how time-clock rounding works. Pasted durations are rounded as a whole.
- Nearest 15 minutes: 1 to 7 minutes past a quarter hour round down; 8 to 14 round up. So 9:07 becomes 9:00 and 9:08 becomes 9:15.
- Nearest 6 minutes (0.1 hour): 1 or 2 minutes round down; 3 to 5 round up. So 9:02 becomes 9:00 and 9:03 becomes 9:06.
Under US federal law, 29 CFR 785.48(b) accepts rounding start and stop times to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth or quarter of an hour, provided it does not, over time, fail to pay employees for all the time they actually worked. The 1–7 down, 8–14 up example comes from the Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #53. The fact sheet also warns that always rounding down can violate minimum wage and overtime rules. State rules can differ, so check the rules where you work. This calculator does the arithmetic; it is not legal advice.
Minutes to Decimal Hours
Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60, rounded to two places. Every 3 minutes is exactly 0.05 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 / 60 = 7.75 hours, not 7.45. The table on this page lists every minute from 1 to 60.
How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract the unpaid break. 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30-minute lunch leaves 8:00, or 8.00 decimal hours. Enter the break in minutes in the Break column.
How are overnight shifts handled?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as ending the next day. 22:00 to 06:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes, and 8:00 after a 30-minute break.
What is the 7-minute rule?
It is how rounding to the nearest quarter hour works. The US Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #53 says time from 1 to 7 minutes may be rounded down and time from 8 to 14 minutes must be rounded up. 29 CFR 785.48(b) allows rounding clock times to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth or quarter of an hour only if it does not, over time, underpay employees. State rules can differ.
Should I type times in 12-hour or 24-hour format?
Either. Add am or pm for 12-hour times, such as 9:30am or 10 pm. Without am or pm, times are read as 24-hour, so 9:30 is morning and 21:30 is evening. The results show how each time was read.
Are my hours sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser as you type, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
