What Is a QR Code?
A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that smartphone cameras can scan. Depending on what it encodes, scanning it can open a website, join a WiFi network, save a contact, start a WhatsApp chat, or begin an email — no typing needed.
QR codes are commonly used on business cards, flyers, product packaging, restaurant menus, WiFi signs, and event tickets to link the physical world to a digital action.
How Big Should a QR Code Be?
A common rule of thumb is a 10:1 ratio: the code should be at least one tenth as wide as the distance it will be scanned from. Bigger is safer, and always leave a clear white margin (quiet zone) around it. The downloaded PNG is high resolution, so it stays sharp when you scale it up for print.
| Scan distance | Minimum size | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 30 cm (1 ft) | 3 cm | Business card, menu |
| 1 m (3 ft) | 10 cm | Flyer, product box |
| 3 m (10 ft) | 30 cm | Poster, window sign |
| 10 m (33 ft) | 1 m | Billboard, banner |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this QR code generator really free with no sign up?
Yes. There is no account, no signup, and no email required. Every option, including WiFi, contact and styled codes, is free to use and to download with no limits.
Do the QR codes expire or add tracking links?
No. The QR code encodes your content directly, so it points straight to your link, WiFi network or contact and never through a redirect or tracking service. It does not expire and no analytics are attached, because nothing you enter is sent to a server.
What types of QR codes can I create?
You can make QR codes for a website URL, a WiFi network, a contact card (vCard), a WhatsApp chat with an optional pre-filled message, an email with subject and body, and plain text. Pick a type, fill in the fields, and click Generate.
How do I download the QR code and what format is it?
Click Download PNG to save the code as a PNG image file named qr-code.png. You can also right-click the code and save it. The image is generated on a canvas in your browser at high resolution, suitable for print or screen.
Can I change the color and style of the QR code?
Yes. You can choose a module design (square, soft, dots or capsule), pick a foreground color, and add a frame such as a Scan Me text bar. Very light colors are blocked automatically and styled designs use higher error correction so the code stays scannable.
