Flatten a PDF Without Adobe
Free ways to do it, and what flattening does and doesn't lock.
The Short Answer
Flattening turns form fields and comments into ordinary page content. The answers stay exactly where they were, but nobody can click into them, change the selection or delete a comment any more.
You don't need Acrobat Pro to do it. A browser tool can draw each value into the page and remove the fields, and the text stays sharp.
Flatten a PDF in your browser →How to Flatten a PDF
- Open the PDF Form Flattener and choose your PDF.
- Check the table of fields and values. It shows which fields are filled and which are empty, so you can catch a missed answer before you lock it in.
- Leave Flatten selected. Keep Also flatten comments and markup ticked to flatten text boxes, drawings, stamps and highlights too.
- Click Flatten PDF and download the result.
- Open the new file and click where a field was. Nothing should be editable.
In our tests, a form with a text field, two checkboxes and a dropdown came out with no form fields left, the typed answer and the dropdown choice readable as normal page text, the ticked box showing its tick and the unticked box staying empty.
What Flattening Locks, and What It Doesn't
| After flattening | Result |
|---|---|
| Answers show the same in every viewer and print | Yes |
| Fields can be clicked or changed | No |
| Text can be selected and searched | Yes |
| Page can't be changed by anyone | No: a PDF editor can still edit it |
| Digital signatures still verify | No: flattening breaks them |
Flattening is about consistency, not security. It stops casual edits and makes a form look the same everywhere. If you need to show that a document hasn't been altered, that is what certificate-based digital signatures are for, and they must be applied after flattening, not before.
Other Ways, and Their Catches
- Print to PDF. On a Mac, choose File > Print, open the PDF menu and choose Save as PDF (Apple's instructions). On Windows, print to the Microsoft Print to PDF printer. This re-renders the whole document, so it records exactly what the viewer drew: a field that shows blank prints blank, and links and bookmarks can be lost.
- Scanning or exporting to images. Flattens everything, but turns text into pictures. The file is usually bigger and the text is no longer searchable.
Things That Trip People Up
- Answers vanish after flattening. If a field already looked blank before flattening, a basic flatten bakes in the blank. The flattener here redraws each field from its stored value first. See why filled forms show blank.
- Special characters. Redrawn values use Helvetica, which covers Western European characters only. Fields with other scripts are flagged and keep their existing look.
- XFA forms. Forms made with Adobe LiveCycle or Designer aren't supported by most non-Adobe tools, including this one.
- Keep the original. Flattening can't be undone. Keep the fillable version in case something needs correcting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does flattening a PDF mean?
It turns interactive parts of the PDF, mainly form fields and comments, into ordinary page content. The values and markings stay where they were, but they can no longer be clicked, edited or deleted as fields or comments.
How do I flatten a PDF without Adobe Acrobat Pro?
Use a tool that draws each field's value into the page and removes the field. The PDF Form Flattener here does that for free in your browser, with no upload. Printing to a PDF printer also produces a flat copy, but it re-renders the whole document.
Does flattening make a PDF uneditable?
It makes the form uneditable as a form. It does not lock the page. Anyone with a PDF editor can still change, cover or delete the flattened text, just as they could with any other text in a PDF. To prove a document hasn't changed, use a certificate-based digital signature.
Will flattening reduce quality?
Not when the values are drawn as vector text, which is what the flattener here does. The text stays sharp and searchable. Methods that convert pages to images, such as some print-to-PDF setups or scanning, can soften text and make it unsearchable.
Does flattening break a digital signature?
Yes. A digital signature covers the exact bytes of the signed file. Flattening changes the file and removes the signature field, so the signature can no longer be verified, even though its appearance remains on the page.
Can I flatten a PDF on a Mac?
Yes. The browser-based flattener works in Safari, Chrome or Firefox on a Mac. Apple's print dialog can also save a PDF (File > Print, then the PDF menu, then Save as PDF); check the result by clicking where a field was.
