PDF Form Flattener

Fix a filled form that shows blank, then lock it. Free, no upload.

What to do

How It Works

Select a filled-in PDF form. The tool reads the value stored in every field, redraws how each one looks using the standard Helvetica font, then either flattens the fields into the page or leaves them fillable. A table lists every field, its type and the value it holds, so you can see at a glance which fields were filled and which were empty.

Everything runs in your browser with the pdf-lib library. The form is never uploaded.

Why Filled Forms Show Up Blank

A form field in a PDF keeps its value and, separately, a small drawing of that value called an appearance stream. Viewers display the drawing, not the value. When an app saves your answers without updating the drawings, it can set a flag asking the next viewer to redraw them. Viewers that ignore the flag show empty boxes, even though your answers are still inside the file.

Redrawing the appearance from the stored value fixes that, and flattening makes sure it can never happen again for that copy. More detail, with the usual suspects, is in why a filled PDF form shows blank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my filled PDF form show blank when someone else opens it?

A PDF form field stores two things: the value you typed, and a separate drawing of that value called an appearance stream. Some apps save the value but leave the drawing missing or out of date, and ask the next viewer to redraw it. Viewers that skip that step show an empty box even though the value is in the file. This tool reads each stored value and redraws it.

What does flattening a PDF do?

It turns each form field into ordinary page content. The values stay exactly where they were, but the fields can no longer be clicked or edited, and every viewer and printer shows them the same way.

Does flattening make a PDF tamper-proof?

No. Flattening removes the fillable fields, but the text is still ordinary PDF content that anyone with an editor can change, cover or delete. If you need to prove a document has not changed, use a certificate-based digital signature. Flattening a digitally signed form also breaks that signature.

Can I fix the form but keep it fillable?

Yes. Choose 'Fix display, keep it fillable'. Every field's appearance is redrawn from its stored value and the form stays editable. Flattening is better when you want to stop further changes or are sending the form somewhere that may not handle forms well.

Why does it warn about special characters?

The redrawn text uses Helvetica, one of the 14 standard PDF fonts, which covers Western European characters only. Values containing characters outside that set, such as Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic or emoji, cannot be redrawn. The tool names those fields and keeps whatever appearance they already had.

Does it work with XFA forms?

No. XFA forms, made with Adobe LiveCycle or Designer, describe the form in a separate XML layer that only Adobe software fully supports. The tool tells you when a PDF uses XFA rather than producing a broken file.
