Make a Photo Square Without Cropping
Keep the whole picture by adding space instead of cutting it off.
The Short Answer
A square crop cuts the long side down to match the short side, so part of the picture goes. To keep all of it, do the opposite: extend the short side with a border until the picture is square.
The border can be white, black, any colour, or a blurred copy of the photo itself. No app is needed; it works in your browser.
Make your photo square →Step by Step
- Open the Square Image Maker. On iPhone, use Safari.
- Tap Select a photo and choose the picture. It stays on your device.
- Pick a background: White, Black, Colour or Blurred.
- Pick a shape: Square 1:1, or Portrait 4:5 or 3:4 for a tall photo that would leave big bars in a square.
- Leave the size on Full size to keep every pixel, or choose 1080 px wide for Instagram.
- Tap Download.
On iPhone, Safari saves the file to the Files app. Open it there, tap Share, then Save Image to put it in Photos so Instagram can find it.
How Big the Border Gets
The square is as wide as the photo's longer side, so the wider the photo, the bigger the bars. Sizes the tool produces at full size:
| Photo | Square | Bars |
|---|---|---|
| 4032 × 3024 (iPhone, 4:3) | 4032 × 4032 | 504 px top and bottom |
| 3024 × 4032 (portrait) | 4032 × 4032 | 504 px each side |
| 1920 × 1080 (16:9) | 1920 × 1920 | 420 px top and bottom |
| 1080 × 1920 (screenshot, story) | 1920 × 1920 | 420 px each side |
For a tall photo, 3:4 needs far less padding: 3024 × 4032 is already 3:4, so it needs no border at all.
Things That Trip People Up
- Instagram still crops. In the feed, Instagram shows photos between 1.91:1 wide and 4:5 tall and crops anything outside that range (Hootsuite's size guide, quoting Instagram's Help Center). A square or 4:5 photo with a border is inside the range, so nothing is cut.
- The profile grid is taller now. Since January 2025 Instagram's profile grid shows 3:4 thumbnails, so square posts are trimmed at the sides there (Buffer's size guide). The post itself is not cropped. If the grid matters to you, use the 3:4 shape.
- The built-in square crop. The crop tools in phone photo apps have a square setting, but it trims the photo. It doesn't add space.
- HEIC photos. iPhone photos are often HEIC. Safari opens them; other browsers may not. Use HEIC to JPG first if the photo won't load.
- Location data. The square image is a new file, so the original's EXIF data, including GPS location, is not copied into it.
Choosing a Background
Blurred fills the bars with a soft, stretched copy of the same photo, so the border blends in. White looks clean on a white feed and suits product photos. Black suits night shots and dark mode. Colour lets you match a brand or theme.
If you do want to cut something out instead, the Image Cropper crops any shape.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a picture square without cropping it?
Make the canvas bigger instead of the picture smaller. Put the photo in the middle of a square as wide as its longer side and fill the empty space with a colour or a blurred copy of the photo. The Fair Toolbox Square Image Maker does this in your browser in a few seconds.
How do I make a photo square on iPhone without cropping?
Open the Square Image Maker in Safari, choose the photo from your library, pick a background and tap Download. The square image is saved to the Files app; open it there and use Share, then Save Image, to put it in Photos.
How do I fit the whole picture on Instagram?
Instagram shows feed photos between 1.91:1 (wide) and 4:5 (tall) and crops anything outside that range. Make the photo square, 4:5 or 3:4 with a border first, so there is nothing left for Instagram to cut off.
Why is my square post cropped on my Instagram profile?
Since early 2025 the profile grid shows tall 3:4 thumbnails, so square and wide posts are trimmed at the sides in the grid. The full post still shows in the feed and when someone opens it. A 3:4 version keeps the grid thumbnail uncropped too.
Does adding a border lower the photo quality?
No. At full size the photo is copied pixel for pixel into the square; only the border is new. Saving as JPG compresses the result once, which is normally invisible; choose PNG if you want no compression at all.
What size should a square photo be for Instagram?
1080 by 1080 pixels is the usual target, and the tool has a 1080 option. Larger photos are fine too; Instagram resizes them.
