Merge PDFs on a Chromebook
Combine PDFs and Google Docs into one file, with no add-on and no upload.
The Short Answer
A Chromebook's built-in PDF editor, the Gallery app, can sign, highlight, rotate and reorder pages, but it can't combine files. Use a PDF merger in Chrome instead: select the files, put them in order, and download one PDF. There's no extension or add-on to install, and the files stay on your Chromebook.
Merge your PDFs →What the Chromebook Can and Can't Do
| Task | Built into ChromeOS? |
|---|---|
| Fill in forms, highlight, add text | Yes, in Gallery |
| Sign a PDF | Yes, in Gallery |
| Rotate, reorder or delete pages | Yes, in Gallery |
| Combine two or more PDFs | No |
| Split a PDF into separate files | No |
Merge PDFs on a Chromebook
- Open Merge PDF in Chrome.
- Click the file picker and select your PDFs in the Files app. Hold Ctrl and click to pick several.
- Put them in order: drag them, or use the arrow buttons.
- Click Merge PDFs, then Download PDF. It's saved to your Downloads folder.
The merge happens inside Chrome on your Chromebook, so schoolwork, contracts and forms aren't uploaded to a website on the way.
Combine Several Google Docs Into One PDF
Google Docs can only download one document at a time as a PDF, so do it in two steps:
- In each document, go to File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf).
- Combine the downloaded PDFs in Merge PDF, in the order you want.
For documents you can edit, there's a quicker way that keeps everything as text: paste them into one Google Doc, add a page break between them (Insert → Break → Page break), and download that single document as a PDF. The same works for Google Slides: download each presentation with File → Download → PDF Document, then merge.
Fine-Tune the Result in Gallery
Once you have one PDF, the Chromebook's own editor handles the rest. Open the merged file from the Files app, and in the page thumbnails on the left you can drag pages into a new order, rotate a sideways page, or delete one. Click Save when you're done.
If Something Goes Wrong
- A PDF won't load. It's probably password-protected. The PDF Password Remover unlocks files that only restrict editing or printing, without needing the password.
- You only need some pages. Pull them out first with the PDF Splitter, then merge.
- Some pieces are photos or screenshots. Turn them into a PDF with Images to PDF, then add that file to the merge.
- The site is blocked on a school Chromebook. Ask your IT team to allow fairtoolbox.com. Don't try to get around the school's filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Chromebook merge PDFs?
Not with its built-in tools. The Gallery app that opens PDFs on a Chromebook can fill in forms, highlight, add text, sign, rotate, reorder and delete pages, but it has no way to combine two files. A browser-based merger does that part.
How do I combine PDFs on a Chromebook?
Open the Fair Toolbox PDF merger in Chrome, select the PDFs from the Files app, put them in order with the arrows or by dragging, and click Merge PDFs. Download the result and it's saved to your Downloads folder. Nothing is installed and the files aren't uploaded.
How do I combine several Google Docs into one PDF?
Download each document as a PDF with File, Download, PDF Document, then combine the PDFs in the merger. If they're all your own documents, you can also paste them into one Google Doc and download that as a single PDF.
Can I reorder or delete pages after merging?
Yes. Open the merged PDF in the Gallery app. In its page thumbnails you can drag pages into a new order, rotate them and delete them, then save.
Why won't one of my PDFs merge?
It's usually password-protected. Remove the password with the PDF Password Remover first, which works on files that only restrict editing or printing without needing a password. Then merge the unlocked copy.
Does this work on a school Chromebook?
Usually, because it's an ordinary web page and needs no extension. If your school blocks the site, ask your IT team to allow fairtoolbox.com rather than trying to get around the filter.
